A strong sense of purpose has been emanating from the Nottingham camp of late. Our recent mix from Hizatron served as an intro to the wide ranging talent on offer within the city limits and now further evidence of a burgeoning and long overdue independence comes in the form of an impressive EP from Wigflex boss Spam Chop.
The Cuckup EP comes on newly (ish) founded Mimm Recordings, part a rapidly growing empire which includes an online store, aforementioned record label and physical premises in the city centre. Three tracks latch onto the zeitgeist of electronic eclecticism that imbued dance music with a fresh sense of purpose last year, blending a loose (rude boy) techno framework with an unmistakeable Nottingham tinge.
Blergz, a toughened mashup of grimy swagger and techno body, is the one which demands immediate attention, though title track Cuckup’s introspective blend of de-tuned synths and skipping drum pattern also begs a second listen. Frames will appease the Berghain-ites, a four to the floor mover with lashings of dread and enough happening above and below the lines to place Spam Chop among the pantheon of UK producers who are taking Berliners on at their own game and raising the bar.
This one out on Monday, keep watch!
